All About New Albany, Ohio
New Albany is a city in the state of Ohio, just northeast of the state capital of Columbus. Most of the city is located in Franklin County and a small portion extends into adjacent Licking County.
Founded in 1837, it is now a growing suburb in the Columbus area. New Albany is both one of the oldest and one of the newest communities in Central Ohio. It was primarily a rural village for nearly 150 years before significant residential and commercial growth arrived, thanks to the influence of The Limited founder Les Wexner.
New Albany was founded in 1837 by Nobel Landon and William Yantis in Plain Township. Land was split into lots and sold to new settlers. One possible origin of the name “New Albany” is that some of its original settlers migrated from the Albany, New York area. The community has also been known at times by the name of “Hope.”
In 1856, New Albany was incorporated in the year 1856, with only a population of 50. In 1881, The Wilkins Lumber Mill (renamed the New Albany Mill later) opened. The mill closed 119 years after its opening in 2008.
Exponential growth began in New Albany in the 1990s, due to the influence of Les Wexner, the founder of The Limited retail giant. At one time, Wexner’s mansion off Kitzmiller Road was the second largest mansion in central Ohio. Around the same time, State Route 161 was converted to a four-lane freeway and connected to Interstate 270, opening the doors to further industrial and corporate development because of the easy access.
A popular community spot in the center of the city, The New Albany Market Square, is home to many businesses, including the New Albany Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Starbucks, Learning Express, New Albany Realty, and Rusty Bucket Corner Tavern.
New Albany is headquarters to a number of well-known corporations, including clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch, restaurant chain Bob Evan Farms, Discover Financial Services, as well as the New Albany-Plain Local School District and the Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital.
